As 2016 draws to a close AutoProtect has revisited some of the biggest motoring news stories of the year and brings you up to date.


Hot on the heels of the news that two drivers for Uber won a tribunal case in which they argued they were workers not contractors two other mainstream members of the Gig Economy have also come under the spotlight.

Deliveroo, which provides take-away delivery services and Amazon could both face a similar challenge that their delivery personal are employees and not independent contractors. If the courts conclude that they are employees, then they will also be entitled to paid holiday, minimum wage, and all the other rights associated with this employment status.

The test of their status largely comes down to Government ‘IR35’ legislation, which sought to identify contractors who exclusively, or very largely worked for one organisation, but who were claiming self-employed status as a way of minimising taxation for themselves and/or the organisation they were working for.
