Update:
By the end of October new car registrations had risen year-on-year to 2.3M, up 2.5%. However, this growth was largely driven by fleet sales and private buyer activity falling very slightly. There also appears to be a growing upward trend in pre-registration activity with the BBC reporting that up to a fifth of new car sales are in fact pre-registrations http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-37795068. Looking ahead to 2017, the SMMT is forecasting new car registrations will fall to 2.544m units, 5.0% down on 2016’s forecast level of 2.678m. Into 2018 a further more modest fall is being anticipated.
